Gatsby is quite the character. He has wealth, a huge house, and hosts a large amount of parties. However, he is quiet and reserved, even when he has awards from every country in WW1 and he went to Oxford. In addition, he appears to have connections all over the world, who call him often enough. What is causing him to be so quiet though? and why does he run away when he meets Mr. Buchanan? So, why is he so quiet and reserved when he has had experiences for 10 men, and appears to be quite a likable fellow, with a jolly good British dialect?
My guess is that he has something to hide. Thus far in the book, he has some of the characteristics of Byronic heroes we talked about last year in Jen's class. Though he's not quite Mr. Rochester, he exhibits several qualities that would normally be associated with such a character. I would suspect that he and Nick get close, but later on have a falling out due to some massive revelation about Gatsby. On the other hand, Fitzgerald may entirely avoid this and just keep his character mysterious and unknown. I guess we'll just see.
ReplyDeleteI thought Gatsby going to Oxford a lie. He seems very quiet and reserved like he is hiding something and the fact that he is cautious about whom he meets makes it even more suspicious. He treats Daisy like he might have past with her. I think he is too nice and he thinks he is better than everyone else. :)
ReplyDeleteYes... we have to question the honesty of someone who claims to be from the "middle west", then names "San Francisco" as his hometown (70-71)!
